Fruits in season and how to adapt your diet to seasons

Nature possess many cycles that our body recognize: day and night, winter and summer, growing and decay, etc. A basic principle of rejuvenating nutrition is to get closer to what nature had intended for our body. Eating fruits in season is good for us for many reasons, normally these fruits are at their absolute best, while being very inexpensive due to their availability. At the same time it reconnects us with nature’s cycles which are slow and can’t be hurried.

To balance our food choices according to climates that we face, we must first understand the concept of “internal fire” drawn from traditional Chinese medicine. Thus, despite the fact that raw foods are beneficial for health, it remains that most raw foods have a tendency to cool our inner fire by providing fewer calories and a lot of water. They also stimulate the work of the kidneys and favor the elimination of minerals by our urine. In the short term, this phenomenon is beneficial because it stimulates the purification of the body. But, in the long run, daily demineralization and low protein intake weakens our internal fire and cools the body constantly.

I experienced the unpleasant effects of weakening my internal fire too much at the beginning of my purification. That happened because I needed to constantly purify my body which was very intoxicated and dysfunctionnal. I was then forced to choose foods that were cooling my internal fire! I noticed consequently how I suddenly became fragile and sensitive to cold temperature.

It is important to realize that our body suffer fluctuations in heat according to our food intake. It is quite possible that you already noticed this reaction, many people naturally balance their food choices according to the temperature outside. For example, in winter, the cold drives us to eat more to protect ourselves under a layer of fat that warms us up. We also burn more sugar because it keeps us warm. It’s not the best season to consume abundant quantities of fruits, salads and raw vegetables. All of this makes a lot sense, given that nature does not normally offer any of these foods during the winter.

To achieve perfect balance of our internal fire and also to benefit from utmost freshness, it is better to eat the foods that nature offers us during each season. Nevertheless, I noticed that fruits and raw foods are still very beneficial during the winter, in the sense that their therapeutic actions are still effective. Once again, therapeutic action is always proportionnal to freshness and if free market allows us to get fresh foods from a distant country, this food is still a valuable asset for our health, even during the winter. What is important, is to make sure that we do not abuse and unbalance our inner fire.

It is most likely that you won’t drink as much water during the winter compared to the summer. Since any purification of the body requires important intake of pure water, which naturally cools the body, winter is not the right time to eat a lot of fresh fruits, drink a lot of water and therefore, purify the body. I would go farther and state that the body won’t respond as strongly as it would during spring and summer if you try to provoke purification by a large intake of therapeutical plants and fruits cures during winter times.

You will quickly categorize the ideal foods for each season once you start listening to your body and eat in a rejuvenating way. Here is how to adapt, in a general fashion, our food to different climates.

Autumn and Winter

In winter, and even starting in autumn, you will have more appetite. It is the best time of the year to put on some muscle mass and healthy weight. Give more complex carbohydrates to your body so that it warms up, but do not abuse. The vegetables that should have been eaten raw during the summer can now be slightly cooked: carrots, beets, zucchini, onions, tomatoes, etc. Gradually remove the sprouted grains and legumes from your diet and prefer them cooked.

Winter is a difficult season that acidifies the body because of the lack of Sun which helps create vitamin D, which in turns fight acidity. This is a season where we naturally have more appetite, so we have to be particularly careful to avoid abuses. Do not stay inactive all winter and do not hide inside all summer long. Take the opportunity to breathe fresh and cold air, excellent for oxygenating the body and burning the calories consumed in excess. The air during the winter is more dense and will strengthen the body if you spend most of your time outside.

Foods, such as raw and soaked nuts, legumes cooked, root vegetables and whole cereals grains should be eaten in larger quantities during the winter. Root vegetables will often be preferred cooked instead of raw and therefore eaten in larger quantities. Acidic fruits must, for their part, be used with moderation during this season : berries, lemon, citrus, etc. Obviously, depending on your acidity level some foods should be restricted or not during this season.

Spring and Summer

Always eat less during the summer. The sun warms us and we burn less sugar. Take advantage of the hot weather to consume larger quantities of raw food. Limit or avoid hot soups and cooked vegetables. Eat less starchy foods like potatoes, bread, pastries and more raw vegetables. Drink enough water and exercise daily to help eliminate toxins.

Summer and spring are great seasons to clean your organism. Our internal fire can draw heat from the outside temperature, we can seize this opportunity to make cures of fruits and small fasting. If our digestive system requires it, it is the perfect time to feed ourselves with fresh fruits and rest. We can eat blueberries, strawberries and raspberries in large quantities if they are not genetically modified and produced without toxins – like chemical products or plastic. I used these kind of cures every summer to heal my body and purify it from different kind of toxins. What matters the most in these cures is the quality of the fruits, which is a profound subject that I will cover in more details later.

In summary, during the summer, eat less and promote raw fruits and vegetables. It is not forbidden to spend a few days to eat only fruits, drink fresh vegetable juice made with a juice extractor and eat a little bit of fish and chicken. This kind of diet does a lot of good in the body as it allows to compensate, to some extent, the abuses or the desequilibriums that follows from winter.

Fruits in season + vegetables in season

Now here is brief list to learn the best foods to consume in each season. This is based on North America availability of foods. This should guide your choices of fruits and vegetables during the year.

January to March

January is one of the hardest month to get fresh food in North America. We must often rely on the food coming for the south hemisphere and countries like Chili, Argentina, Mexico, etc.

good choices of fruits*: all raw nuts, pink grapefruit, kiwi, pineapple, apples, avocados, pears, oranges, asian pear, papaya, cantaloupe.

good choices of vegetables: cabbage, garlic, beet, carrots, rutabaga, turnip, potatoes, onions.

* : obviously no fruit grows during the winter so these are juste the best options normally available on the market and that keep their freshness longer. Other fruits can be used, but I did not included the most acidic ones because they should be mostly avoided.

April and june

April and may offer low diversity in terms of fresh local foods. The northernmost you are located, the more you will have to wait until june before really seeing fresh fruits and vegetables arriving in super markets.

good choices of fruits: strawberries (in june), pink grapefruit, kiwi, pineapple, apples, avocados, papaya, cantaloupe.

good choices of vegetables: roman salad, radish, shallot, spinach, parsley, cabbage, garlic, beet, carrots, rutabaga, turnip, potatoes, onions.

July August september

These are the best months of the year to purify your body. Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables across the season. You should focus more on fresh berries during the summer, then starting in late august, you should focus on fresh vegetables.

good choices of fruits: raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, cherries, etc.

good choices of vegetables: leek, tomatos, peppers, squash, zucchini, garlic, roman salad, radish, shallot, spinach, parsley, brocoli, okra, beet, carrots, rutabaga, turnip, potatoes, onions, cabbage, etc.

October to december

During this period of the year, there are still a lot of choices of vegetables available. Many fruits were recently harvested like apples, pears and more so you should rely on those.

good choices of fruits: pomegranate, peach, pear, apple, plum, etc.

good choices of vegetables: leek, tomatos, peppers, squash, zucchini, garlic, brocoli, cabbage, cauliflower, beet, carrots, rutabaga, turnip, potatoes, onions, etc.
