Understanding the Universe with Ying Yang

Einstein was convinced that the laws of the Universe could be expressed in a simple and elegant manner. His famous formula E=mc^2 is a perfect example of such concise and powerful expression that can explain an important part of the universe: the link between energy and matter – two distinct schematisations. He thought that an equation which could unite the different parts of physics should exist and that this equation would replace the need for quantum mecanics, based on statistics instead of an immuable thruth (a deterministic thruth).

Theoratically speaking, it seems possible that such an equation be found someday but maybe this is not how we should approach this problem. Scientists of previous eras did not see equations as links between different schematisations or rules to explain behavior within a specific schematisation. The first step of every scientific journey shoud be to study those schematisations and understand the philosophy of the whole Universe. Then, someone can decide which relation he wants to investigate in order to find an equation.

For example, Newton found equations related to the movement of matter and the impact of gravity on matter. So basically, he observed the schematisation of matter and found laws to describe it. Then, Einstein realized that these laws were not true when the matter approach the speed of light, but only very small particules can achieve that (according to what we know today). Therefore, Einstein studied the links between the energy schematisation and the matter schematisation, something completely different. We should not say that Newton was wrong, because he was not. He was right for what he tried to describe, so was Einstein but he was describing something different.

If we have the mathematics concepts with a concise enough symbol notation, we could probably write down an equation to explain how the universe works but before achieving that, we must find the relations between all the schematisations and the laws the govern every schematisations. That is a lot of work! Then, this equation would most likely be complex in its understanding and include a contradiction in itself, which makes it harder to guess since our intuition tends to separate ideas that conflict with one another while the Universe seems to be made of the reunion of contradicting parts: a deterministic part and a chaotic part.

Why would this equation contain a contradiction may you ask? Well, because that’s how the universe seems to be made and should be understood on a philosophical stand point. The Universe can be reprensented with this old symbol that we call Yin and Yang.

In Chinese philosophy, yin yang describes the Whole, or the Universe, which is made of opposite or contrary forces that are at the same time complementary, interconnected and interdependent. A very important notion is also the fact that these forces are equal in power, which underlines an equilibrium of forces that creates the Universe, that being represented by the symetry in the design. Each forces push on one another, also represented on the design. Lastly, in everything that exist, there is both yin and yang, which means that nothing is pure yin or pure yang. This is represented by the fact that in the white part, there is a small black dot and in the black part, there is a small white part. For example, no evil man is completely evil, there is always a counterpart of opposite nature in every extreme.

Many tangible dualities can be found around us: day and night, good and bad, joy and sadness, love and hate, life and death, growth and decay, etc. All these dualities must find a sufficient equilibrium so that human life exist and make sense. These are all clear examples of the structure of the Universe observed in nature or in our emotionnal system: both inherit from the structure of the Universe.

Yin and yang is true knowledge that has been discovered more than 5000 years ago by very wise and pure human minds. It is the simplest way to explain what we need to understand about the Universe if we want to live according to its principles. It underlines the duality of the Whole and therefore the equation that would desbribe the Universe would have to underline this fact. That’s why it should contain a contradiction.

We can learn how to interpret the Universe by understanding its schematisations first, which is a knowledge more accessible to the majority and most useful. These schematisations are built in a way that teach us about the Universe goals and structure, which can help us understand how to live healthy and in equilibrium with the Universe. For a scientist, understanding the philosophical structure of the Universe can allow him to work backwards and then search for equations that could describe it according to a certain perspective: energy, matter, life, nature, human, etc.

In my own journey through life I had to make a choice at some point. I could have pursue a deeper understanding of the laws of the universe in physics textbooks and based my understanding on experiments done on non living things or, I could try to understand the laws of the Universe through life and the interaction of my body with nature. Since I was sick, the more practical approach was chosen.

My life experience showed me that the goal of human beings should not be to try to play God by predicting nature or controlling it, neither should it be to try to dominated the Universe. Our greatest challenges are not in outer space and far away, but in our close relationship with our environment. In other words, understanding our right place and our specific purpose in the Whole, or in nature, is more important than to try to understand the reasons why the Universe is that way. The motivations of God, here seen as the reasons why the Universe exist, are none of our business and won’t bring anything useful to our quality of life. On the contrary, understanding how we fit in what actually exist and how we can achieve a greater equilibrium with our environment is crucial and yields the greatest promises for a bright future.

The Greeks had a very simple maxim to lead a person to wisdom: Gnothi seauton or know yourself. Why did they end up putting that principle at the top of what is the most important in life? Isn’t life more about learning to know the others, the others places, how to please people, how to be a good citizen, how to make money and prosper? No, all that comes after truly knowing yourself, which is a never ending journey. Finding in ourselves the greatest challenges of life is the real key to knowledge and self improvement.

The same is true for the Universe. It is not of primary importance to learn about outer space and the rules of the Universes in itself. We should first learn to know ourselves and our right place into the structure that surrounds us. How to prosper, how to attain equilibrium with nature, how to become what we should really be? These questions must be placed higher up in the hierarchical order of our consideration in life.
